Judges will consider the quality of the journalism, although not mainstream like daily newspapers, community newspapers have a high reach and impact, this award is given to a journalist who attracted the attention of its readers to important issues of responsible drinking.

Best Radio | Community/Non-Commercial

The Winner will receive R20 000.00 for this award.

This category honours community radio that reaches a specific target audience, a crucial part of the South African broadcasting landscape, providing diversity for listeners and content that inspires and talks to their community. Judges will judge this award based on who provided a strong message that spoke to their audience, if it was educational, informative and provided a solution to problems within their community.

The Winner will receive R20 000.00 for this award.

This category honours commercial radio that reaches a broader target audience in South Africa. Commercial radio continues to push the boundaries with the strength, depth, and quality of their coverage. Judges will judge this award on demonstration of passion for original journalism, highly engaging campaigns, thoughtful storytelling and imaginative treatments all for the benefit of millions of listeners.

Best TV

The Winner will receive R20 000.00 for this award.

This category honours journalists who are making an invaluable contribution to the responsible drinking agenda in South Africa via the broadcast media on television. Judges will consider the quality pieces that make a strong statement towards the Responsible Drinking Agenda

Best Online

The Winner will receive R20 000.00 for this award.

This category honours all media published online. An entry may consist of an article, columns, blog, digital media, video, podcast, illustration, image with caption etc. Judges will consider the quality of the journalism and if the online work speaks to the responsible drinking agenda.

Best Magazine

The Winner will receive R20 000.00 for this award.

This category honours excellence in journalism presented in a single package or story that shows significant depth, insight and new understanding of a story or topic. Entries may present profiles, feature packages or watchdog journalism relating to responsible drinking. Judges will consider the quality of journalism, the medium which can be national or regional and if the reporting made a strong statement.

Alcohol Policy Award

The Winner will receive R20 000.00 for this award.

This category honours a single story or series of stories that covers policy around the use and sale of alcohol as well as the economic role of the sector. The award recognises a public service for a defined and specific topic through compelling coverage of a vital community issue or event driving the responsible drinking agenda. Entries will be judged on the techniques and resources deployed to engage the community in the reporting process. Judges will also consider the impact of the work through subsequent coverage, conversations or resulting policy changes.

Influential Voice

The Winner will receive R10 000.00 for this award.

This category honours the best use of social media for an individual who has contributed to the responsible drinking agenda. A unique and powerful voice of commentary, this individual will need to showcase how they have contributed through content created and shared online. Entries will be judged on their freshness of insights and explanation, including overall impact and engagement of their content. Enter any or all social media that best exemplify your voice. Platforms include, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Tik Tok

Best up and coming (Only Journalism students eligible to enter)

The Winner will receive R10 000.00 for this award.

This category honours excellent student journalism that uses storytelling to inform its audience relating back to the Responsible Drinking agenda. Judges will consider the quality of the journalism of the student or students, how their topic employed to reach, inform, educate, and engage with the audience.

Journalist of the Year

The Winner will receive R30 000.00 for this award.

Journalist of the Year is not open for submission, judges will recommend and select the winner based on all entries received.

The prestigious accolade will be awarded to a South African journalist who has proactively reported once off or regularly about Responsible Drinking and associated issues. Judges will consider the work of the winning journalist and base their judging on the how the content highlight, profile and engage with the issues around Responsible Drinking. An important criterion is the content must successfully create awareness to encourage behavioural change.
