The Judges

Each year, the RDMA judging panel is composed of an eclectic mix of media experts with a broad range of expertise. Past judges have included the likes of Raymond Louw, Pippa Green, Mahlatse Mahlase and Phatiswa Mogopeni. The 2019 judging panel is listed below.

Jovial Rantao
Jovial Rantao
Jovial Rantao a freelance journalist editor, media trainer and political analyst. He is a former Group Ombudsman for Independent Media. He was the founding editor of the African Independent. He was also previously editor of The Sunday Independent, The Sunday Tribune and deputy editor of The Star. Before these appointments, he held numerous positions including executive editor, news editor, political editor and political as well as a labour correspondent. He is the current chair of The African Editors Forum and former chair the Southern African Editor’s Forum and the South African National Editor’s Forum. Rantao has also co-authored the book The Life and Times of Thabo Mbeki, published in 1999. He serves on the boards of the Institute for the Advancement of Journalism and the Special Olympics of South Africa.
Dinesh Balliah
Dinesh Balliah
Dinesh Balliah is a journalism lecturer at Wits University and editor of the student publication Wits Vuvuzela. She is the former deputy public advocate of the South African Press Council. She currently is a director and board member of Health-e News, advisory committee member of the South African Media Innovation Program (SAMIP) and editorial board member of Newzroom Afrika.
Megan Lubke
Megan Lubke
Megan is the Executive Producer of the English news broadcasting on Full View which is aired on SABC News on DSTV channel 404 and SABC 3. Prior to joining the SABC Megan was an Executive Producer at Talk Radio 702 and Cape Talk, and prior to that a Senior Producer at ETV. Megan has a degree in journalism from Rhodes University and an intimate knowledge of what it takes to produce great radio and TV journalist. She was also the winner of the 2019 RDMA Journalist of the Year.
Mahlatse Mahlase
Mahlatse Mahlase
With a career spanning 18 years, Mahlatse has honed her skills as a broadcast and print journalist for Africa’s biggest news platforms including the SABC, News24 and the BBC. She is currently working as Group Editor in Chief at Primedia Broadcasting and is the Chairperson of the South African National Editors’ Forum.
Mahlatse Mahlase
Mike Siluma
Mike Siluma has worked in the media as a print and electronic journalist and columnist for more than 20 years. His career has included being Editor of Sowetan newspaper, Managing Director of Jacaranda FM, Head of Radio News and Current Affairs at the SABC and Africa Editor at eNCA. He is also host of the Africa-focused show, Karibu, on Kaya FM 95.9. In addition to being a previous chairperson of the South African National Editors' Forum, Mr Siluma has also been a judge in a number of national journalism competitions.
